In the distant southeastern corner of Crete, we find a number of contrasts harmoniously combining: the mountain with the sea, the wild with the tame landscape, the traditional housing with heavenly beaches, abrupt mountain ranges with hidden gorges and fertile plains with green olive groves and vineyards. Wild nature with friendly inhabitants.
ETIA: an abandoned small village which reached its peak during the Venetian times. You can visit the Venetian villa which is the most important private Venetian building in the Cretan countryside. It was built in the 15th century by the feudal landowner Pietro di Mezzo. During the Turkish occupation it was named “SERAYIO” because high-ranking Turkish military officials lived there. There are also two beautiful churches, the Virgin Mary’s and Saint-Catherine’s, which will surely interest any visitor.
CHANDRAS: a picturesque village with traditional architecture and a number of windmills. The church bell tower is unique and charming. The village also boasts a museum of folklore.
VOILAS: we encounter this abandoned village only 500 meters from Chandras. “Voilas” in the byzantine era meant “noble”. Certain buildings are still maintained quite well. The Venetian tower of the village is unique as is Saint-George’s church.
PAPAGIANNADES: a picturesque village with Minoan structures at “Monastiraki” and a Minoan sanctuary at “Saint-Lias”.
ZIROS: the largest village in the area where you can spend time walking, wandering the charming small paths and admiring the beautiful Byzantine churches. It is built on the northern side of a lovely verdant plain full of vineyards. There are also traces of ancient Greek and Roman civilizations but a systematic excavation has yet to be completed. The 14th century Byzantine wall mural at Saint-Anna’s church is of great interest.
HAMAITOULO: midway in this truly impressive route towards Xerokampos we encounter a small pretty village with few inhabitants (at this point, adventure-seekers will find the crossroad to the picturesque bay of Saint-Irene, as long as they have the appropriate vehicle for the steep dirt road).
At the end of this serpentine spiraling route, we find Xerokampos with its blue beaches and the Kavalon islands at the largest beach, Mazida Ammo, and there you will reach the NATICA MARE VILLAS on the downhill slope.
UPPER ZAKROS: a beautiful picturesque village with samples of traditional architecture. With breathtaking greenery, the gorge, to the west of the village, has streams which used to supply water to 12 traditional windmills. From an archaeological point of view, there are two important sanctuaries at Vigla and Trastallo.
THE GORGE OF THE DEAD: the entrance to the Gorge of the Dead is midway from Upper to Lower Zakros. It is called such because there are a number of graves from the Minoan era in the caves of its steep slopes. The descent is not very difficult and takes about an hour.
LOWER ZAKROS: Zakros sets itself apart with its wild natural beauty as well as boasting the third most important palace from the Minoan civilization. It reaches 8.000 square meters, has two floors and about 300 rooms.
It was used from 1600 to 1500 B.C. when it was destroyed, most probably by the volcanic eruption of Santorini. It was never rebuilt. However, in its heyday, it was characterized by an important growth of commerce and small industries.
KAROUMES: a beautiful remote beach with an ancient mine (there is a path from Zakros of about 5,5 km for those who like walking).
NATICA MARE VILLAS are in the region of Xerokampos, 47 km south of Sitia, 103 km southeast of Agios Nikolaos and 65 km east of Ierapetra.
The inhabitants of the region experience their traditions on a daily basis through numerous celebrations and festivals where one can learn about the musical and literary traditions of Crete. There is a great deal of work done in different aspects of traditional crafts, such as: goldsmiths, wood carving, textiles, painting.
The captivating natural environment has many different contrasts. As you traverse the green plain of Xerokampos, full of olive groves, and the bluest deep sea, depending on the season, with its wonderful beaches, on the one hand, and the harsh colors of the gorge, on the other hand, which allows one to enjoy the wild and imposing mountain ranges full of caves. This rugged and wonderful land attracts people in a magical way. Either the locals, who have worked this difficult land and have transformed it into olive groves and vineyards, have built charming dwellings and chapels or the traveler who is captivated enough to discover it.
Xerokampos is a unique holiday destination. It has wonderful beaches of about 5 km. Open bays of green-blue waters and golden sand, bays with small pebbles but also a perfectly clear sea which becomes deeper by degrees.
The largest beach, “Mazida Ammos”, is located right in front of our villas. It is a fantastic large beach with fine sand and blue waters where we find the Kavalon islands. The name “Mazida” is a variation of “Mother Earth”. On the east, it is protected by the Trachilas cape where we can find a cave of seals. Jean-Jacques Cousteau spent a whole summer on this beach. In the west, there is a small port called Amatou.
The town of Xerokampos is located further to the east of this large beach. The church of Saint-Nicholas is situated close to “Farmakokefalo” as are the ruins of the Greek town Ampelos, which was established in the 5th century B.C., when it was also a commercial center.
There are two pristine beaches which are worth visiting as you descend (one of these, “Argilos”, named as such because of its soil, has numerous visitors which enjoy themselves by bathing in its muddy waters and making beauty masks).
The town is spread out amongst the olive groves all the way to the sea. There are wonderful family tavernas with delicious food from the inland up to the shore. Protected lilies grow in the sand. Continuing your walk towards the east, you will find the impressive Alatsolimni, a salt lake from which the locals would collect salt up until 1965. Flamingoes congregate in its shallow waters.
Koufonisi, which in reality is not one island but a number of small islands with a very rich history, is located towards the west and accessible by boat. The area has a number of gorges: the Xerokampos gorge, Ziros, Lamnon (with a wild nature of great beauty and a two-hour descent of average difficulty), the gorge of Saint-Irene-Zirou (which are actually two parallel gorges, the most western one being more dangerous and difficult to traverse) and, finally, the gorge of Katsounaki, an easy gorge which ends at the amazing beach of Alonas or Katsounaki. It is a well-hidden beach surrounded by caves, where turtles find refuge to lay their eggs.
